Mary Craig designed 680 Buena Vista Drive in 1929 as one of her first residential commissions, and she composed it like an Andalusian hill village. White plaster volumes step down the site under antique Spanish tile, joined by brick courtyards and terraces that look out to the ocean and the islands.

Mary Craig designed 680 Buena Vista Drive in 1929 as one of her first residential commissions, and she composed it like an Andalusian hill village. White plaster volumes step down the site under antique Spanish tile, joined by brick courtyards and terraces that look out to the ocean and the islands.
Xorin Balbes, the restoration designer behind the Sowden House and Talmadge Villa in Los Angeles, restored and expanded it between 2024 and 2026. Craig's carved doors and windows are still in place, now alongside doors, windows and antique lighting brought from Portugal, hand-applied plaster, and peg-and-groove Douglas fir floors about 150 years old.
The main residence holds four bedrooms, two of them primary suites, the upstairs one with a meditation room and its own terrace facing the ocean. The kitchen runs on two La Cornue ranges beside a wine cellar and two butler's pantries, and there are nine fireplaces across the property. A courtyard cottage, an office suite and a two-bedroom pool house bring it to eight bedrooms in 10,701 square feet.
The pool and spa sit at the center of the courtyards, beside a pavilion with a theater, a gym, a sauna, a cold plunge and an open-air bar. The gardens Lockwood de Forest first laid out have been kept and carried further, out under the old oaks to a pickleball court and its trellised terrace, a short way from the Upper Village.
