Ellen DeGeneres owned this 1917 farmhouse in Toro Canyon and restored it with Clements Design, and the result is a house that feels both a century old and entirely current. It sits on ten level, gated acres in the foothills above Summerland, land that was orchards and horse pasture when the house was built and still holds that shape: a white clapboard house under old oaks, a barn larger than the house, and open pasture running toward the mountains.

The main residence stays at the scale of the original, 1,994 square feet, and uses that scale carefully: a glass conservatory off the living room, a dark kitchen set against pale plaster, a wraparound screened porch facing the lavender field, and bedrooms with deep windows onto the gardens. Montecito's Upper Village, the design district of Summerland, and Padaro Beach are a few minutes down the road, and none of them intrude on the property.

The barn is the larger building at 2,319 square feet, and the restoration treated it as a second house rather than an outbuilding. Under its vaulted white ceiling are a game room, a creative studio, and guest quarters. Outside, two fenced turnouts and open pasture keep it a working horse property, and a gravel drive runs the length of the land beneath the oaks.

Lawns surround the pool and spa, a sport court sits past the gardens, and the views reach from the Santa Ynez Mountains to the ocean. Montecito has few farmhouses of this age that kept their acreage, and this one kept its character with it.
