Engs Addition, 1993
The house began as a cottage brought up from Port Hueneme and dates to 1947. In 1993 the Los Angeles architect Edward W. Engs renovated and expanded it, adding a two story primary suite that takes in the ocean on one side and the mountains on the other. Chronicle Books published the house in California Beach Houses in 1996, in a volume written by Pilar Viladas and photographed by Mark Darley.
The plan inside is open and turned toward the water. An enclosed glass windbreak terrace sits at the beach side, so the room stays usable on the afternoons when the wind comes up, and the kitchen and dining areas look straight through it. Entry is from a private gated courtyard and walk up deck on the land side, which keeps the arrival separate from the beach.
