Adele Wilder, a Hollywood designer, conceived this house around her love of the English countryside. It sits on 1.3 secluded acres in Birnam Wood, the guarded Montecito club laid out around a Robert Trent Jones golf course.

The approach shows a run of steep rooflines: the main house, two guest houses, a two-car garage and a separate garage for golf carts. The whole property is turned toward the Santa Ynez Mountains, and its rooms open onto four brick patios set among lemon, orange and avocado trees.

Built in 1981, the house has been through two rounds of upgrades. The dining room is the standout, walled in brick and glass under a domed skylight. A glass-walled kitchen and great room opens through two sets of French doors to an outdoor dining patio, and the primary suite has an office of its own. There are three fireplaces and a walk-in wine room.

A semi-attached guest suite and a detached two-room guest quarters with a kitchenette bring the total to four bedrooms. Within the club's 226 acres, members have golf, tennis, pickleball, a gym and dining behind a 24-hour guarded gate.
